Recently, Dominica’s President Sylvanie Burton and her spouse, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and his spouse, and Chinese Ambassador to Dominica Chu Maoming attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dominica International Airport Project undertaken by the Overseas Branch of China Railway No.5 Engineering Group.
In his speech, Prime Minister Skerrit emphasized that the Dominica International Airport Project is a cornerstone for the nation’s future economic and tourism development. He noted that the project will not only enhance Dominica’s influence in the Caribbean region but also provide convenient travel conditions and create numerous job opportunities for Dominicans, effectively improving local livelihoods. He praised the China Railway No.5 Engineering Group project team for their high standards and professionalism and expressed hope for the project’s early completion, envisioning it as a model of cooperation between Dominica and China that will benefit Dominica and its neighboring regions.
The Dominica International Airport Project is the largest construction project in Dominica and the Central American-Caribbean region to date. It is also China Railway No.5 Engineering Group’s first overseas EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) design-build contract project funded in cash. Upon completion, the airport will accommodate large aircraft like the Boeing 777-200, with an annual passenger throughput of approximately 500,000. It will serve as a vital transportation hub connecting Dominica to the Caribbean and countries in Europe and North America.
